Welding Machinery

In manufacturing, one of the vital fabrication processes is welding. Welding is actually the joining of materials together. While the most common material to be welded is metal, other types of materials can be welded as well. The concept of welding uses the theory of creating fusion by melting metals through welding equipment and machinery.

The most common type of welding is arc welding which uses electric power in keeping an electric arc between the base materials and the electrodes in order to melt the metals. Welding does not only require proper skills but efficient equipment and machinery as well. In order to produce a well welded metal, the welder must possess more than just the basic welding skills. Moreover, the type of welding machinery used also dictates the outcome of the welding process.

The other types of welding include oxyfuel welding, resistance welding, gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, laser beam welding, submerged arc welding, and electron beam welding. These welding types require different types of welding machinery, and the methods of the welding process vary also.

The shielded metal arc welding is the most common type of arc welding. This type of arc welding is also known as the manual metal arc welding (MMA) or stick welding. The machinery used in this type of arc welding is composed of the power supply which provides the electric current, and the welding machinery itself. The medium for joining the metal together is the consumable electric rod. The welding machinery used for the shielded metal arc welding is relatively inexpensive.

In the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) though, a continuous wire feed is used as an electrode. Moreover, a semi-inert gas mixture is used in protecting the weld from contamination. Furthermore, the welding speeds for this type of arc welding are greater because of the continuous electrode. However, the welding equipment for the gas metal arc welding is more complex and more expensive.

Aside from the various welding machineries that are used in different fabrication industries, the proper personal protective equipment is also very important. Proper protective equipment protects the welder from risks of burn and fire. Protective equipment includes leather gloves, safety shoes, protective long jackets, goggles, and welding helmets.
